3 Reasons You Should Clean Your Gutters Before Winter
Fall is a beautiful season; the leaves begin to change color, the air becomes delightfully cool and the children begin looking forward to Halloween. However, fall comes with its list of chores as well. One of the first things on the last is usually cleaning the gutters. Cleaning the gutters can be a drag, but it is an important and necessary part of maintaining your house properly. There are a number of reasons as to why the gutters should be cleared out before the winter snowfall.
Build up of Debris
Gutters collect any debris that falls off of the roof and traps it until it is cleaned out by the homeowner. If this debris is not cleaned out, it can create a clog which can eventually cause the gutter to overflow. This can cause damage to both the drainage system and the house itself. To avoid this, it is recommended that the gutter is cleaned at least once a year. However, depending on the amount of tree surround the house, it can range from 1 to 3 times a year.
Often time, gutters will collect more than just debris. Sometimes, pieces of food or small animals can get stuck in the gutters. This can attract larger animals like squirrels, mice, and birds to the gutters. These animals can cause serious damage to the gutter over time, which can total in the thousands of dollars.
Icicles and Ice
When gutters are not cleaned, they are known to overflow. This can be an issue in the winter when the temperatures drop below freezing. The cold weather turns the overflowing water in icicles, which can grow to dangerous sizes. Any excess water that isn’t turned into an icicle makes its way to the ground. This water turns to ice and can be a tripping hazard.
Although it can be a bit of a pain, cleaning your gutters in the fall can save you some money in the winter.
