Preparing for Summer Storms
Summer is usually a time of warm (sometimes unbearably hot) weather and getting outside for fun. It’s the time of year that you get to spend a lot of time relaxing by the pool and hanging out with friends at a BBQ.
Every so often, a nasty summer storm (or two) will move through the area and wreak havoc. This can cause a lot of damage to your property and your home. There are some ways to ensure that your roof is prepared for these summer storms.
Get an Inspection
The first step in preparing your roof for summer storms is to get it inspected. Having a roofing professional look at your roof and find any damage and fixing it can be incredibly beneficial. You probably don’t want to find out you have a leak or loose shingles the hard way, which means during the storm. This could lead to water getting into your home and weakening the structure of your dwelling.
Repair or Replace Damaged Shingles
If during the roof inspection the professional finds damaged or missing shingles, getting them replaced can be beneficial. Again, this can prevent water from getting into the home. It can also prevent further damage from occurring and you need to get your entire roof replaced.
Trim the Trees
During a huge storm, the chances for high winds to occur increases. If you have trees near your home, this could mean that the branches get blown onto the roof, where they can cause damage. It’s also possible that the entire tree could be uprooted or struck by lightning, causing it to fall into your home.
To prevent this from happening, it’s a good idea to take precautions to keep branches away from the roof and the tree as far away from the home as possible. In general, you want to have at least 6 feet of clearance.
Keep Your Gutters Clean
When summer storms bring torrential rains, you want to make sure that this water doesn’t get into your home but is carried away from the structure and into the yard. That’s the purpose of gutters. To ensure they are doing their job correctly, you need to make sure they are clean and clear. This is a job you can do yourself or one you can call a professional to help you with.
